Who are we at Semler Health?

Here at Semler Health we care about your heart! We believe that with the right tools, a little bit of knowledge and some positive thinking you can easily and effectively manage your blood pressure. But where did we get our start? Who are the faces behind the knowledge? Semler Health is the culmination of years of experience on behalf of Dr. Herbert J. Semler, M.D. and his dedication to extending people’s lives through heart health education.

Dr. Semler grew up in Portland, OR and served in the Korean War as a Flight Surgeon. He received his training from the Mayo clinic, was the Chief of Medicine at Fairchild USAD Hospital in Spokane, WA and became the Chief of Cardiology at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, OR. Dr. Semler was Oregon’s first Board Certified Cardiologist.

In 1978, he and his wife Shirley established the Shirley and Herbert Semler Foundation which has funded the medical education of numerous students at the Mayo Clinic. In 2008, Dr. Semler was named Clinical Professor of Medicine for the Cardiovascular Medicine Division at OHSU and 2011 he was awarded The Distinguished Alumnus Award for achievements reflecting the highest ideals of the OHSU School of Medicine.

With a voracious desire for helping others, Dr. Semler has invented medical instruments for detecting cardiovascular disease and has published many scientific papers. He continues to reside in Portland with his wife, the love of his life, of over 65 years. With the help of his small, close-knit team, he hopes to share his knowledge with the world through Semlerhealthusa.com and the Semler Heart App to help people live long, happy lives.

  1. The “Why Weight?” book is perfect and a wonderful reference. It’s not overwhelming, just a great guide for anyone who wants to live a long and healthy life. Dr. Semler’s lifetime dedication and knowledge of our health is a gift to those of ALL ages, young to old. I loved one of his favorite sayings that “people often wait to fix the roof until it starts to rain.” Thank you Dr. Semler for your lifetime, genuine dedication to caring for others.
